Did God accomplish all of His creative acts within six 24-hour days ... or did God's creative acts unfold over billions of years?
The question is not what God is able to do, or what tradition says God did, but what the Bible says God actually did.
We know the order of God's creative acts, but we don't know how long ago or over what lengths of time, but there are strong reasons from within scripture to believe that a creation 'day' is an age (long indefinite time).
It seems from scripture that the Big Bang (Genesis 1:1-2) occurred long before the beginning of the six 'days' of creation (Genesis 1:3-31).
See the Bible study here on why creation 'day' is more than 24-hours.
In stretching and defending the Bible, some Christians are actually degrading the Bible's authority and giving credence to science's rise as the new authority.
When Christians insist from tradition that the Bible says the universe was created less than 10,000 years ago all in one week – even though the Bible really doesn't say that – it pits the Bible against science and makes them enemies of each other.
Instead, Christians should embrace scientific discoveries and claim them as part of Christianity – as the design of our almighty God – rejoicing that God allows us to learn more and more about His marvelous creation every year. Discovery is vastly different from creation!
The materials, compounds, instruments, machines, and structures that man has built from God's physical laws and atomic building blocks have made life better for everyone. They are gifts from God. No one wants to go back to primitive days.
Even apart from the Bible, Christians know instinctively from common sense that there is super-human intelligence and design behind the amazing discoveries.
Due largely to career and social push-back against over-zealous Christians, most scientists simply say that life is a mystery, and they maintain an agnostic attitude toward God, publicly at least.
Scientists don't fight Christianity until Christians move into the science domain and make stupid pronouncements that scientists know are false.
For the most part, scientists are just trying to figure out how the natural world works.
By stretching the Bible, blindly defending tradition, and fighting science – rather than embracing science as the progressive discovery of God's design – many Christians have set the stage for the tragic shift away from God that's occurring in American today.
In the Millennial and Gen Z generations – which are now more than half of the U.S. population – science IS god for most, and Christianity is increasingly regarded as irrelevant.
Christians are largely to blame for this seismic shift from Christianity to science because most Christians don't have the interest or courage to face the divisive issues and to re-read scripture in light of new knowledge. Christians are not prepared to answer the tough questions.
